How to play 2048
Slide matching numbers together to build a 2048 tile. Choose the classic 4×4 board or a roomier 5×5. Each size keeps its own saved progress and score records.
- Use the arrow keys, WASD, on-screen arrows, or swipe on the board to slide tiles in one direction.
Arrow key or WASD input not registering? Try the key once in Your Home Cues' keyboard check. It shows what this browser receives; it does not diagnose the key switch, operating system or game.
- Two equal tiles combine when they meet: 2 and 2 become 4, then 4 and 4 become 8. New tiles appear after successful moves.
- Reach 2048 to win, then choose to keep playing for a higher score. The board is stuck when there are no empty cells and no possible merges.
- Switching board sizes preserves the current board and resumes the other size. Undo history belongs to the current session.
A tip for your next game
Try keeping your largest tile in one corner and arranging smaller tiles toward it. Before swiping away from that corner, check whether the move will scatter your largest tiles or fill your remaining space.
