A little practice. A little progress.
How to play 2048: merges, move order and board space
Use four verified tile rows to see exactly what one swipe does, then practice on the classic 4×4 board.
Practice on a 4×4 board →The rule behind every move
Swipe or use an arrow key to slide every tile as far as it can go. Equal neighboring tiles combine in the direction of travel. Each tile can take part in only one merge during that move, and the value of each new tile is added to your score.
Two pairs stay as two merges
The two 2+2 pairs become two separate 4 tiles. They do not immediately combine into 8 because both new 4 tiles have already resulted from a merge in this move.
A new tile cannot merge again in the same move
The first pair becomes a new 4 beside the existing 4. Those two 4s can merge on a later move, but not during this one.
Direction decides which pair merges
Moving left combines the leading pair
Moving right combines the pair nearest the right edge
With three equal tiles, the pair nearest the side you move toward combines first. Reading the row from the destination edge helps you predict the result before you move.
Three practical habits
- Protect open space. A nearly full board leaves fewer legal moves. Prefer a move that merges tiles or keeps several empty cells.
- Build toward one corner. Keeping larger values along an edge can make the board easier to organize. Treat this as a useful pattern, not a guaranteed solution.
- Look one move ahead. Check which pair will combine first and where the new random 2 or 4 could appear. Use Undo when you want to study a different choice.
What happens at 2048?
When two 1024 tiles merge, Matte Games shows the 2048 result. You can start a new game or choose Keep Playing and continue the same board. The 4×4 and 5×5 modes keep separate saved boards and statistics.
No strategy guarantees a win: new tiles appear in random open cells, and each board develops differently. The examples above describe the exact merge rule; they are teaching rows, not promised future positions.
