A little practice. A little progress.
Solitaire Draw 1 vs Draw 3
The tableau rules stay the same. The difference is how cards leave the stock—and which waste card you can use.
| Rule | Draw 1 | Draw 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Cards turned per draw | One | Up to three |
| Playable waste card | Top card only | Top card only |
| Stock recycling | Unlimited passes | Unlimited passes |
| Tableau building | Descending rank, alternating colors; Kings fill empty columns | |
| Learning focus | Seeing each stock card in turn | Planning access to cards beneath the top waste card |
A three-card example
Imagine the next cards dealt from the stock are 5♣, then 6♦, then 7♠. In Draw 1, the first click exposes 5♣. You can try to play it before drawing 6♦. In Draw 3, one click deals all three and leaves 7♠ on top.
If a red 8 is exposed in the tableau, you can move 7♠ onto it. That uncovers 6♦ in the waste. If a black 7 is available, 6♦ can move there, exposing 5♣. You do not have to draw again between these legal plays.
What happens at the end of the stock?
A draw turns over the remaining cards even if fewer than three remain. Once the stock is empty, clicking it recycles the waste into the stock. Matte allows unlimited passes, but other Solitaire sites may use different limits or scoring.
Playing cards removes them from later passes, so the grouping can change. If a complete pass changes nothing and no useful tableau move is available, repeating it alone will not create a new opportunity.
Which mode should you choose?
Start with Draw 1 if you are learning alternating-color runs and foundation building. Each stock card gets its own turn on top. Choose Draw 3 when you want to plan around cards that are visible but temporarily blocked.
Draw 3 is generally more restrictive, but difficulty varies with the deal. Neither mode guarantees a win. Our numbered deals are Matte-specific; matching a number from another site does not promise the same layout.
Keep practice deliberate
Use Restart this deal to repeat the same arrangement and New deal for a different one. The dedicated Draw 3 entry has its own save, so trying it preserves your ordinary Klondike game. Read our Solitaire strategy guide for decisions beyond the stock.
